Not everyone at the Bürgenstock signed the final declaration on Ukraine

The summit dedicated to Ukraine at Bürgenstock, near Lucerne, ended shortly before 2 p.m. this Sunday. The final declaration of this high-level meeting devoted to Ukraine, and organized by Switzerland, was supported by 84 countries and various invited institutions. But none of the BRICS member countries, close to Moscow, has done so.

Among the countries, which did not want to adhere to the final declaration, are Brazil, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the Vatican, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Indonesia.

But the President of the Confederation, Viola Amherd, concluded on a positive note: “For the first time, countries did not talk about weapons, they talked about peace. Even if all the voices were not always identical, all agreed on principles.

The President of the Confederation welcomed: “The vast majority of states agreed on a joint communiqué, which shows what can be achieved with diplomacy.”

She referred to the three important resolutions of this meeting: “First, any use of nuclear energy and nuclear installations must be safe, secure, protected and environmentally friendly.”

“Second, food security cannot become a military issue. Attacks against merchant ships in ports and on the routes they take or against civilian ports and port infrastructure are unacceptable.

“Third, the release of all prisoners of war must take place on the basis of a full exchange. The return to Ukraine of all illegally deported and displaced Ukrainian children and all other arbitrarily detained Ukrainian civilians must be ensured.”

In the final document in English on the Confederation website, we find the following demands to support Ukraine and move towards a peace process.

– All parties must be involved in the peace process.

– Ukraine’s sovereignty and respect for its internationally recognized borders are non-negotiable.

– Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia or displaced must be able to return to Ukraine.

– The safety of nuclear power plants, including that of Zaporizhia, must be ensured.

– Food security must be ensured by preventing any commercial obstacles, particularly transport.
