Its birthplace was the Rhône. And his baptism was watery to say the least. The Brotherhood of Pirates of Ouchy celebrates 90 candles this June 16. “The celebration is planned for September in our vineyards in Ouchy,” announces Jean-François Cachin, deputy big boss.
It was on the return of a memorable “decision” of the Rhône (boat trip) that the Société vaudoise de navigation (la Nana), founded in 1946, the Rescue Society, born in 1885, the Cercle de la voile (1919 ) and the Nautical Union (1920) decided, 90 years ago, to constitute the noble and venerable Oscherin brotherhood. Francis-Marius Messerli will become its first boss.

Heirs of the ancient nauts of Lake Geneva, the Pirates of Ouchy – nearly 500 members today – still cultivate their libertarian and rebellious spirit. Their brotherhood has no other goals than the friendship of its members, the glory of Lake Geneva and the nautical prosperity of Ouchy, we can read in its activity report for the year 1934: “Our society is a union of navigators and admirers of our lake, rowers, fishermen, sailing people, who, when they meet offshore, greet each other fraternally, always ready to help each other. And who, when they moor their boats, shake hands cordially and tell each other frankly what they think.”

Beyond certain “stunning” actions (such as the “theft” of pedal boats in Ouchy), their action is above all heritage-related, the Pirates of Ouchy want to safeguard and perpetuate Lake Geneva traditions. Their main action is to preserve and navigate The Vaudoisea former boat from Lake Geneva, which they have owned since 1948, the last boat of this type built (in 1932) for the transport of goods.
Lausanne, source of the Rhône
The birth of the brotherhood was followed on June 29, 1934 by the Fêtes du Rhône. For the pirates, these began with the reception of the Rhone banner, the planting of a tree at Denantou and with the baptism of the flag of the new brotherhood at the Château d’Ouchy.
That day, a torrential rain received the delegates from the French Rhone towns and the guests, including the mayors of Marseille and Toulon, reports the “Tribune de Lausanne”: “God what was falling,” explains the journalist. A Marseillais told us straight away that he thought he had arrived at the sources of the Rhône, but, opening a large umbrella, he declared himself ready to receive the blessing.”
