More than 500 journalists from the Swiss and international press are accredited to cover the Bürgenstock summit. “China is not present, but it is important to be here because we are going to talk about China,” explains Liu, a journalist working for a Hong Kong media outlet. For two days, with a colleague based in London, he will try to understand what is happening in this eagle’s nest overlooking the Lake of the Four Cantons. “I already have my opinion,” he explains. What’s the point of organizing a conference to talk about peace if one of the parties is not present? Although Beijing has indicated its disinterest, several Chinese media still made the trip.

The same goes for the press of the main absentee, Russia. Three pro-government media are present at the Bürgenstock, the Tass and Ria Novosti news agencies, as well as the business daily Kommersant. “We only received accreditation,” laments Youri Apreleff, Ria Novosti correspondent in Geneva. All other agencies received two.” According to the Russian journalist – recently elected head of the UN press correspondents’ association following a hotly contested process – “the Ukrainians really prevented our presence”.
