Friday June 7, 2024, shortly before 5 p.m., the Navigation Brigade of the Geneva police intervened to come to the aid of a seriously injured man, indicates the Geneva cantonal police in a press release.
The young man, born in 2004, plunged from a height of 28 meters from the Jonction viaduct. “He was transported by boat to the Route des Péniches to allow him to be picked up by an ambulance and transported to hospital.”
The police wish to “raise awareness among the population not to carry out this type of dangerous practice, often exposed on social networks with a spirit of emulation. In addition to being prohibited, jumping from such a height into the water presents significant risks of serious or even fatal injury.”
The police specify that it is “extremely difficult to estimate the depth of the water and the current from height. If the current is strong, it will be very difficult for someone who is not used to operating in this type of environment to reach the shore quickly.
85 km/h at the time of impact
After jumping from such a height, the diver reaches approximately 85 km/h upon impact with the water. This can cause, even in the event of perfect reception, “serious trauma”, such as fractures or spinal trauma which can lead to paralysis, damage or hemorrhage to internal organs, or concussion with disorientation. “Each of these traumas can lead to drowning and therefore death.”
The police finally indicate that people who witness this type of jump “immediately alert the emergency services, which leads to a significant deployment of forces to provide assistance and save lives”.
