AMMAN, June 11 (Xinhua) — The UN Secretary-General, leaders of regional states and the top US diplomat met in Jordan on Tuesday and stressed the need to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid in the conflict-ravaged Gaza Strip.

At a conference titled “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza,” they called for an intensification of efforts to help Palestinians in Gaza.

Jointly organized by Jordan, Egypt and the United Nations, the conference aims to develop a collective response to the dire humanitarian situation in the enclave.

In his remarks at the conference, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi welcomed Resolution 2735 adopted by the United Nations Security Council on Monday, which supports a comprehensive ceasefire agreement and an exchange agreement of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas, as well as the entry of sufficient and lasting humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

He called on countries to force Israel to stop “using hunger as a weapon” in Gaza and to remove obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid.

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who also participated in the conference, called for support for the humanitarian aid programs presented by the Palestinian Authority and other countries to help the suffering Palestinian people.

“The (Palestinian) government presented its programs of aid, restoration of basic services, institutional reform and financial and economic stability, and announced its readiness to assume its functions in Gaza, including all the gang’s crossing points, just like in the West Bank,” Abbas said.

At the conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called on the international community to support Jordan’s crucial role in assisting Gaza residents and as a key regional hub for humanitarian response . He praised Jordan for its support efforts, including sending aid convoys, airdrops and setting up field hospitals.

At the conference, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new aid package worth more than US$400 million for the Palestinians. END
