The Conservatives say they will oppose the new tax measures presented in the Liberal budget.

The comments come just hours before the House of Commons votes on a Liberal motion to force Canadians who profit from asset sales to pay more capital gains tax.

The Conservatives did not make their position on the capital gains adjustment known until Tuesday.

The Liberals say this is a tax fairness measure, aimed at forcing the richest Canadians to pay their fair share.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said in a statement that it won’t hurt billionaires, but will affect farmers, small businesses and doctors.

He is committed to creating a working group, made up of entrepreneurs, inventors, farmers and workers [mais pas de lobbyistes]which will propose a reform of the system within 60 days of becoming prime minister, which would simplify tax rules, cut taxes and reduce business subsidies.

For his part, the leader of the Bloc Québécois affirms that he will vote in favor of increasing the tax on capital gains, but that he will then try to obtain amendments in committee to protect small savers.
