“We did the test in Flanders, and since it works, it will arrive in Walloon Colruyt stores very soon! »

It is in a building in Halle, hidden from view, that Colruyt invents and develops technologies that will revolutionize the way you shop, saving you time or improving your customer experience. We were able to visit it.

Once these innovations have been developed and validated in the laboratory, they are put to the test during full-scale tests, with real customers, in the Colruyt store in Halle. One of the largest in the country, with 3,000m², where customers get a “preview” of the new products planned by the Colruyt group… Even if some will not make it past these doors, due to lack of success.

“It happens that the tests are ultimately not that conclusive, and that we go back,” explains Gilles Godin, Innovation Manager. “We tested the single line at the checkouts, with the first customer going to the first available checkout. In the end, it didn’t save any more time.”

Better manage checkout lines

On the other hand, among the innovations that appealed to Hal, there is this camera installed at the top of the entrance, which counts the number of customers.

“On this basis, and knowing the average time a customer spends in store, we can estimate in real time whether the number of open checkouts is sufficient, or whether more need to be opened. Previously, you had to observe the lines at the checkouts and call back employees. Today, the system anticipates itself to reduce queues.” Knowing that the average “authorized” waiting time at the checkouts is 3 minutes.

Another conclusive test: the sale of weekly magazines in a dedicated display. “We tested it with the Flemish periodical press, and since it works, it will arrive in Walloon stores very soon,” we are told.

Another test in progress: a location with… small DIY materials. There, no decision to deploy it nationally has yet been made. It will depend on the success or not at the end of this corner.

From change to butchery

In Hal too, the particularity is to have two cold zones: one for fruit, vegetables and dairy products, and the other for the butcher’s, fishmonger’s, prepared meals and veggie alternatives. A system which, here too, will cause oil stains. “Not with two separate cold zones, but we are going to review the layout of the butchery areas of our stores to integrate fish and veggies. This will be the “protein” area, where you will choose the basis of your meals before continuing with your purchases.”

In Halle, we also find a large assortment resulting from the integration into the Colruyt group of Newpharma, with food supplements for athletes, vitamins, dressings… “We also have sufficient space to integrate new products into the food assortment, and see whether or not customers like them before including them in the general assortment of stores.”

Small amusing detail: the bread cutting machines are not set to the same thickness of slices in Wallonia as in Flanders… The Flemings prefer thicker slices. And in Brussels, both thicknesses are often available, your choice!
