Across the NHL: Auston Matthews will not face the Bruins

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is dealing with an upper-body injury and will miss Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins.

His state of health will be reassessed on a daily basis.

Matthews played in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, recording an assist in 22:12 minutes of play.

The 27-year-old has scored five goals and 11 points in 13 games this season.

The Maple Leafs are 6-5-2 this season and are third in the Atlantic Division.

The Maple Leafs will play two more home games this week — Friday, against the Detroit Red Wings, and Saturday, against the Montreal Canadiens.

Tyler Johnson’s debut

One day after signing a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Boston Bruins, forward Tyler Johnson will make his debut with the team tonight against the Maple Leafs.

Johnson joined the Bruins in August on a professional tryout contract and had one goal and two points in four preseason games.

The 33-year-old spent the 2023-24 season with the Chicago Blackhawks, recording 17 goals and 31 points in 64 games.

He helped the Tampa Bay Lightning win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

The veteran played 738 career games in the NHL, amassing 193 goals and 431 points, split between the Lightning and Blackhawks.
