Neuchâtel deputies agreed on Tuesday by a large majority to toughen the law on home education to model its requirements on the other French-speaking cantons. Home schooling of a child will now be subject to authorization.

(Keystone-ATS) “This is not about banning home schooling. But currently there is no way to impose control, apart from a denunciation to the child protection office or a guardianship,” declared Crystel Graf, state councilor in charge of training.

The Council of State must be able to determine the conditions and procedure to be followed to homeschool a child or reintegrate them into public school. Currently, 148 children are home schooled in the canton. “In the vast majority of cases, things go well, but for some there is a risk of social isolation or falling behind in school,” added Crystel Graf.

The law provides in particular that the authorization is granted for one school year and can be renewed.
