The result of an enlightened vision, this iconic building is intended to be a realization of the High Royal Solicititude constantly demonstrated with regard to art and culture. This new theatrical structure is marked by its location, its aesthetics and its innovative technicality which represent a major turning point in the cultural landscape of Morocco.
Launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God Help Him, and part of the development program of the city of Rabat, this major project contributes to the strengthening of cultural infrastructures in the different regions of the Kingdom and promotes the influence culture of Morocco in the world.
A symbol of great modernity, the unique design of the Royal Theater of Rabat brings a contemporary touch to the architecture of the capital and makes it not only a place of artistic representation, but also a work of art in itself.
Located in the heart of the Bouregreg valley, in the continuity of the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Royal Theater of Rabat stands as a symbol of the cultural and artistic renewal of the capital of the Kingdom. It will breathe cultural dynamism into Morocco, by promoting a modernist approach to Moroccan art, with all that ensues in terms of promoting creative abilities.
Built by the Agency for the Development of the Bouregreg Valley and designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, the Royal Theater of Rabat is spread over 7.1 hectares of land including 25,400 m2 of constructed area. The work integrates harmoniously into the site of the Bouregreg valley thanks to its shape, designed to merge with the dynamism of the site and blend into its landscape.
Made up of several cleverly distributed spaces, the Royal Theater of Rabat stands out first of all for its innovative layout, which allows interactivity between its different components, but also for fluid mobility of the public thanks to monumental staircases, passageways, elevators as well as dedicated access for people with reduced mobility (PRM) in accordance with the principle of “mobility for all”.
The Royal Theater of Rabat includes an auditorium, a large performance hall, which can accommodate more than 1,800 spectators. Boasting a unique design, based on a distinctive and innovative geometric faceting of the walls and ceiling, this auditorium can accommodate a wide range of artistic and cultural events (theater, dance, ballet, opera, musicals, symphony and philharmonic concerts, as well as than other forms of live performances).
Intended to be a world-class establishment, the auditorium of the Théâtre Royal de Rabat offers acoustics that meet a level of insulation classified among the best international standards. The sound quality inside this auditorium is exceptional with acoustic architecture and engineering designed to provide an immersive sound experience for spectators.
A removable ceiling in the form of an acoustic reflector also constitutes a central element and represents a singularity.
The Royal Theater of Rabat includes a second performance hall with 250 seats, which, open to all cultural experiments and expressions in their multiple and varied styles and genres, was designed to become the springboard for the new Moroccan artistic scene.
As for the exterior of the Theater, it includes an amphitheater with a capacity of 7,000 people, intended to host festivals and other major events.
The Royal Theater of Rabat promises an immersive cultural experience through a rich program hosting national and international cultural events, thus helping to enrich, even more, the cultural scene of Rabat and Morocco as a whole.
