Jim Sheppard, founding bassist of Nevermore, expresses his disappointment at not having been consulted for the group’s reformation, but sends his encouragement to his former comrades Jeff Loomis and Van Williams.

A return without Jim Sheppard

Nevermore guitarist and drummer Jeff Loomis and Van Williams recently announced the band’s resurrection via a teaser titled Resurrecting The Dream. However, Jim Sheppard, a founding member alongside the late Warrel Dane, is not part of this new adventure.

In a statement released on January 4, 2025 via BlabbermouthSheppard shared his reaction: “In my heart, Nevermore will always be Warrel, Jeff and I living in a one-room apartment, slaves to an eight-track recording machine, in non-stop creative madness. […] I’m disappointed that no one has contacted me regarding the use of the name Nevermore, a name that represents blood, sweat and tears. That said, I wish them the best.”

Open auditions for a new start

On December 31, 2024, Loomis and Williams announced that they were searching for a new vocalist and bassist through worldwide auditions. In a statement, Van Williams explained the controversial decision: “Some people think it’s disrespectful not to include Jim or not inform him of our plans. But those who think this way don’t know the history of the group or the internal dynamics that led to this decision.”

Williams spoke of relationships that had become “irreconcilable” over the years, emphasizing that their choice was motivated by a desire for a fresh start while honoring the band’s legacy.

For his part, Loomis defended their approach by asserting: “No one can replace Warrel Dane. […] We are looking for someone who can carry the old material with their own vocal style and bring something new and refreshing to this new chapter.”
