Singer Désiré François chose December 24 to release his latest song entitled La Ter nou Zanzet. The song was co-written with singer Denis Fricot. This single was released accompanied by a Music video. The clip is visible on YouTube. It is not for nothing that the singer chose this date to release this title. He intends to attract the attention of as many people as possible.* “I have often visited the western part of the country, from Tamarin to Baie-du-Cap via Rivière-Noire, La Gaulette and Case-Noyale. One day I met an elderly man there, who told me how he had lost land because his name was not spelled correctly on the official papers. I found this story bizarre, then I took the time to observe what is happening in this part of our island. I thus noticed that the descendants of slaves had been sidelined. Pa pran zot kont mem. Slavery is no more, but they have no land of their own. The settlers took everything and did not share. We obtained our independence several decades ago, but in this neighborhood where descendants of slaves live, nothing has changed. However, around there are vast areas of land, but all fenced and sometimes with electric wire”*, emphasizes Désiré François.
The singer wants his fans and the authorities to question this situation which he does not find normal. Hence the fact that he chose Christmas Eve to release this new title. As usual, with La Ter nou Zanzet, the singer highlights our sega. The lyrics of the title are meant to be meaningful and thought-provoking. “Why is it necessary to fight on the land of our ancestors to get a piece of land to live? … all the legitimate heirs who do not enjoy the inheritance today are victims … do not make me believe we have no share in our territory. The singer wonders how the land in these regions was granted. “Today it is foreigners who profit from these lands,” he says. He therefore invites his fans to come and see what is happening there.
Désiré François went to visit the place where, he said, the descendants of slaves live. He explains that he was shocked. “They were put in a corner, in the dirt. Do these people deserve to live like this? I don’t understand. The authorities need to look into this closely. This situation concerns all Mauritians not just one community”underlines the singer. It is his incomprehension and his cry of injustice that we hear in Here is the Land of our Angels.
For the purposes of the clip, Désiré François climbed the Morne mountain, an emblematic place of slavery. He also contrasts the outdated and modest buildings of the descendants of slaves with the grandiose villas erected on the mountain. The singer hopes that his song will be listened to by as many people as possible and that this will make the authorities react. Here is the Land of our Angels will also be at the heart of a concert that Désiré François is planning for next year. The singer and the group Cassiya will meet their fans on March 1, 2025 for a concert at the Trianon Convention Center, which will also see the participation of Reunion singer Dominique Barret. Note that they are already on sale on the Otayo website.
