Anthracite: the ending explained
Descriptive text here

Available since April 10 on Netflix, the series Anthracite continues to be talked about. If the ending suggests a possible sequel, the creators say a little more about its meaning. Be careful, the explanation gives rise to spoilers.

Inspired by a true story, the series Anthracite has resisted the top 10 since its release on Netflix on April 10. Created by Fanny Robert and Maxime Berthemy, many of you got caught up in the adventures of Ida (Noémie Schmidt), Jaro (Hatik) and Giovanna DeLuca (Camille Lou). The three investigators, who seek to elucidate the mystery surrounding the collective suicide of the 30-year-old solar temple sect, will discover many sordid secrets.

A program with many twists and turns, with a most surprising ending which deserved an explanation from the creators.

Anthracite: an unsuspected villain

It is in a flashback that we discover the whole truth about the proven killer. While from the start all the clues point to Calber Johansson, the guru of the box sect locked up in a psychiatric hospital following the tragedy, it is ultimately Claude, played by Kad Merad, Jaro’s uncle who is the murderer.

Yet another twist – and not the least – where we discover Claude, a teenager raping his sister Juliette. The man we thought was Jaro’s uncle is actually his father. Juliette’s best friend is aware of the facts, Claude decides to kill her so that she cannot reveal anything. To cover his tracks and put the blame on the box sect, he marks Roxane’s face with anthracite. A secret that even pushes him to kill his wife.

Anthracite: an end thought out from the beginning

The end is a hard blow for the subscribers of the streaming giant, who had not imagined for a second that the nice uncle could be the author of all this chaos which has marked the region for years. However, this unexpected finale was thought of from the start of the program, as Maxime Berthemy explained during a press briefing:

“We had the idea of the ending from the beginning. Claude, the character played by Kad Merad, was always the big bad guy. On the other hand, the story of the sect, with Valérie who had two children, was more evolving. But the family history was there from the beginning.”

The creator continued to give further hints about the fall by specifying that “Claude is the origin of evil” and to add: “If we retrace the story, it all started with the death of Roxane Vial, which triggered the collective suicide, then the arrest of Caleb, then the arrival of Solal thirty years ago. It is thanks to her videos that the nurse discovers the sect and so on. There is a sort of original sin which is the rape of his sister, which triggered a whole series of events“.

For Fanny Robert, the moral of the story is to trust “no one” and even those closest to you: “There is a folklore with monsters who have goat heads, but in reality, it is an intimate and family drama which is at the origin of everything. This is what we wanted to tell.”
