Film adaptations of video games have often (always?) been divisive, and the franchise Sonic is no exception to this rule. Under the direction of Jeff Fowler, the films Sonic have met with undeniable commercial success, despite a quality of writing and staging that we would describe as uneven to remain polite. Carried by Ben Schwartz (the voice of Sonic), James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Jim Carrey in the role of Dr. Robotnik, and with Keanu Reeves to voice Shadow in the third opus, the blue hedgehog trilogy was able to find its audience, and reported crazy money according to the established expression.

The first opus, released in 2020, had already surprised with its $319 million at the global box office, despite a launch marred by a controversy over the initial design of the blue hedgehog. Sonic 2released in 2022, confirmed this craze with $405 million in revenue. Finally, Sonic 3released on Christmas 2025, added $276 million, bringing the trilogy's total to over $1 billion. In a recent interview with Cinema Today, Jim Carrey said he was willing to reprise his role for a possible Sonic 4. Let the astonished raise their hands.
In the large family of profitable adaptations, we find in first place The Super Mario Bros. Movie (that of 2023 obviously) with 1.36 billion dollars in revenue. Then comes the Warcraft of 2016 with its 439 million dollars in revenue, followed by Pokémon : Detective Pikachu with its $429 million at the worldwide box office. It will be noted that the ignoble Rampage is not far away, with its 428 million at the box office, whileUncharted with Tom Holland brought in “only” $407 million.
And we haven't finished eating video games adapted for cinema, since 2025 will see the release of the film Return to Silent Hill by Christophe Gans, our brains will rot in front of Minecraft film them with Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to be released in theaters in October 2025.
