With rare exceptions, film titles give the subject, a theme or use a quote to convey an idea. But some feature films are so sure of their shot that they have fun with their audience by giving a big clue about the outcome via the translations.
Frank Darabont: a limited but striking filmography
Frank Darabont. This is a name that cinema fans know well. Of Hungarian origin but born in France, in Montbéliardhe quickly emigrated to the United States with his parents, where he developed a passion for cinema. Although he did not follow any particular studies, he entered the industry “by talent” and started on the sets as a production assistant and decorator. The author is very impressed by the work done and decides to keep the name of Frank Darabont in mind. Meanwhile, Darabont co-written The Nightmare Claws, The Blob, The Fly 2 or even The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones et Tales from the Crypt. Known for The Mist, The Majesticthe immense The Green Line or even episodes of The Shield, The Walking Dead (of which he directed the very first episode) or even Raineshe is also the one we find behind the camera for The Escapees. Adapted from another Stephen King novel, the film came out in 1994 and flopped. Only after that the film gained enormous fame and cult film status.
A title with meaning
Supported by two truly exceptional actors in their respective roles, the film tells the story of Andy Dufresne, wrongly accused of the murder of his wife, and that of Ellis Reddingan inmate he befriends at Shawshank Prison. The French title gives a huge clue to the end of the story, since indeed, Andy (Tim Robbins) manages to escape after digging a tunnel. For his part, Ellis (Morgan Freeman) is serving his sentence for a murder he committed and ends up leaving after an absolutely incredible speech. But then, why Les Évadés in the plural?
In fact, only one of the two friends escapes! Well, the answer is to be found in the original title, which is The Shawshank Redemption (The Shawshank Redemption). The latter suggests that this sordid place allows you to find a form of salvationand it can take various forms. Here, we find ourselves faced with an innocent person wrongly imprisoned who manages to regain his freedom by refusing an unjust fate, and a criminal who, over the course of his years of detention, found peace and managed to convince a judge that he can finally reintegrate into society. The original title, which is also that of the novel, focuses particularly on the fate of Ellis, Andy’s escape being ultimately considered “legitimate”.
