James Gunn wanted a groundbreaking change in the 'Superman' suit: “I was on the 'team without underpants'”

James Gunn wants to leave its mark on the new DC Universe that has already started with ‘Creature Commandos’released this December on MAX. However, the password of DC Comics -with the bat's permission- is ‘Superman’directed by himself, and in which he was about to make a big change in the superhero's costume: removing his underwear from the outside!

It is something that, in fact, Zack Snyder already did in 'The Man of Steel', 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice' y 'Justice League'and Gunn acknowledges that they had that debate on the 'Superman' team.

“I was on the 'no underwear' team for a long, long time,” the director admits. “And Zack said that when he did it he tried a million different versions of underwear, just like we have too. I went back to 'no boxers, no boxers, no boxers'. AND In the end it was like 'let's leave the underwear on and see what happens'”.

As Gunn says, they tried dozens and dozens (probably hundreds) of costume variations, with and without underwear, until David Corenswet, who plays the superhero, found the key. “David said something that really affected me,” Gunn continues. “We tried all these versions and we tried it on screen, with underwear and without. AND One of the things David said is that Superman doesn't want kids to fear him.”.

“He's an alien, he has incredible powers, he shoots rays with his eyes… He could be considered terrifying as an individual, and he wants people to love him. “It wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity,” concludes the director. “So He dresses like a professional wrestler, in a way that people don't fear him.”.

When is 'Superman' released?

'Superman' will hit theaters next July 11, 2025in a very busy summer in the theaters, since we will also be able to enjoy '28 years later', 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' o ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’among others.
