HBO Max appeared in the United States in May 2020 in order to establish itself as a competitor to other streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+. Two cult animated works from Lord of the Rings to discover
Indeed, for the first time on a streaming service, the public can discover two films from the world of the British writer with Lord of the Rings released in 1978 and The Hobbit from 1977. These two productions are animated films.
The first was directed by Ralph Bakski and proposes the adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers. If at the time of its release in 1978, Lord of the Rings was not really unanimous among fans and critics, the animated film has become cult over the years. He also strongly inspired Peter Jackson for his cinema trilogy.
The Hobbitdirected by Rankin/Bass and produced by Topcraft is the musical animated film adaptation of the novel Bilbo le Hobbit published in 1937. Broadcast on NBC, the production received a Peabody Award and was recognized for its artistic and narrative quality with a Christopher Award.
For the moment, we do not know for how long these two classics of the Lord of the Rings will be available on HBO Max and especially if French subscribers will have the opportunity to discover these two retro-looking animated works that adapt Tolkien's work in the 1970s well before the live action adaptations by Peter Jackson.
