In 2013, Tom Cruise decided to take on a science fiction film that explored a dystopian future where Earth had been devastated by an alien invasion and humanity was struggling to survive in a hostile environment.

>> He's the best sci-fi director, but he hates one of the genre's greatest films: “There are no more surprises” <<

This movie is called Oblivionand it is as interesting as it is visually stunning, but its release took place almost at the same time asIron Man 3 and so it was quickly eclipsed. Today, he deserves a second chance.

What is the film about?

In 2077, Earth was devastated by an alien invasion. Drone repair technician Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is sent to the planet as part of an operation to extract vital resources after decades of war against terrifying aliens.

>> “So many things we've never seen before“: this is the best science fiction film of 2024 according to Christopher Nolan (the director still can't get over it) <<

Although he resides in a beautiful building in the sky, far from any danger, he is suddenly forced to save an unknown woman from a crashed ship. This event sets off a series of twists and turns that will lead Jack to question everything he knows about war, discover surprising truths about Earth's past, and demonstrate heroism he never thought he was capable of. in order to save the human race.

Oblivion received mixed reviews at the time. For some, the best parts of the film are the landscapes and futuristic architecture, as they are visually stunning, not to mention the actors do a great job. But for others, the film has a slow, predictable pace that fails to hold the audience's interest for its two-hour duration.

Overshadowed by Iron Man 3but still a good recipe

Oblivion may not be Tom Cruise's best sci-fi film, but it's an entertaining film with an interesting story and impressive visual storytelling. It is also made by the same man as Tron: Legacy and the producer of Planet of the Apes: OriginsJoseph Kosinski, which guarantees good fictional storytelling.

>> Ni Armageddonis Fusion : it's the stupidest science fiction film according to NASA and it's available on Netflix <<

The problem is that it was released on April 10, 2013 in , only 14 days before Iron Man 3a film that was a phenomenon in theaters, reflecting the great momentum that Marvel had with its big screen adaptations. And although it has been largely ignored, Oblivion still ended up grossing nearly $280 million, more than double what it cost to produce.

More than 10 years after its release, Oblivion is gaining more and more fans, and there is no doubt that having Tom Cruise as the main character has something to do with it. That's why now is the best time to give this movie a second chance, especially since it is currently available to stream on Max.
