Sony is afraid of flop and reveals the first 8 minutes of the film

At the end of 2024, the new production signed by Sony Pictures and Marvel may have difficulty finding a place. Kraven the Hunter will enter French cinemas on December 18. But faced with real behemoths like Wicked, Le Roi Lion : Paperback or even Sonic 3will the new Marvel character manage to do well? Even without this duel of strong licenses, it must be said that the bet is far from won. Marvel productions under the Sony Pictures umbrella now enjoy an almost comical reputation. After failures like Morbius et Madame Webit's hard to imagine this film as anything other than a cinematic meme.

Especially since the numerous postponements of the project are not reassuring. Initially scheduled for July 2023, Kraven had to face the hazards of the actors' and screenwriters' strike. Then, the idea of sharing an outing with Deadpool & Wolverine in August 2024 pushed Sony to plan a final postponement for the month of December. But a few weeks before the final launch: the hype remains non-existent. “Give our film a chance“ has even just declared the director JC Chandor to ComicBook. Sony seems just as desperate since the studio has just shared the first eight minutes of the film to try to reassure still reluctant spectators.

Eight minutes to convince

On X, Aaron Taylor-Johnson presents the video as a gift as the end of year holidays approach. But who is this gift for: the spectators who don't care or the studio who tries to save the furniture at the last minute? This kind of practice is far from usual for a superhero film and is certainly explained by alarming forecasts from Sony. Nothing very surprising since the ideal conditions are far from being met. Kraven is still unknown to the battalion – unlike Venom who was able to count on his popularity – and carries around the pans of the studio's latest failures.

So what do these first eight minutes tell us about the new Marvel? As expected, Kraven the Hunter focusing on action, testosterone and fighting. We have to make the “R-rated” classification profitable in American cinemas. The extended extract doesn't show anything that the trailers haven't already tried to explain to us and therefore suggests a passable adventure, at best. All that remains is to hope that these first impressions will give way to a good surprise in the theater… At worst, we will be treated to a few weeks of very good memes on the networks.
