« Sweet dreams are made of this… » Although the lyrics of Eurythmics warn us from the credits that “Kinds of Kindness” is the stuff dreams are made of, it is difficult to take off from the ground where Yórgos Lánthimos nails his characters. With these three stories played by the same actors, the director of “Poor Creatures” embroiders around the notions of free will, control and submission in social relationships, sex and religion. Above all, he enjoys himself, and his actors (Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe), in the provocation which does not lead far.

Let’s save the first segment, quite funny, about a guy taking orders from his boss even in his love life. The role is played by Jesse Plemons, winner of the acting prize at Cannes, an award that one would find exaggerated if it were not for the discreet rise of a formidable actor that it came to distinguish. A glance at Plemons’ CV commands respect. Among the filmmakers who directed it: Scorsese and Spielberg (twice each), Jane Campion and Paul Thomas Anderson.

But it was on a series, “Fargo”, that he met his wife, Kirsten Dunst, with whom he also shared the poster in the recent “Civil War”. As a psychopathic soldier, he made his scene, the least spectacular, the strongest in the film. At 36 years old, with his ordinary physique and his atypical face as a baby-faced Matt Damon lookalike, he can play everything: trash as well as docile teddy bears, drama as well as comedy. We will find him in the next Lánthimos, again with Emma Stone, about two conspirators who kidnap the CEO of a large company. To try it is to adopt it.
