Zhang Yimou to direct The 3-Body Problem

The announcement was made at the Shanghai International Film Festival. According to China’s national news agency Xinhua, the feature film is in the early stages of development. Which means that the project is confirmed, because it is already underway. The film will cover the first volume of the trilogy.

It will be a Chinese-language film, but there is no doubt that the adaptation will find its way into our cinemas. Previously, it was director Fanfan Zhang who was to direct a feature film based on Liu Cixin’s books, but the project was thrown out – even though filming was finished (many reshoots took place).

In no less than 40 years of career, this is the first time that Zhang Yimou has approached the science fiction genre. This is a project which should therefore attract the attention of both film buffs and sci-fi fans.
