With ‘Horizon, an American Saga’, Kevin Costner signs an epic and ambitious fresco on the conquest of the West, in theaters on July 3, 2024. Discover our review and the trailer!

Kevin Coster has delusions of grandeur. The actor and director is back on the stage – after a visit to the last Cannes Film Festival, out of competition – with a pharaonic and ambitious projecta epic saga on the conquest of the American West in 3 movies lasting 3 hours each (!).

The first part of Horizon, an American saga is expected in French cinemas on July 3, 2024, eve of the American national holiday. Kevin Coster had already expressed his interest in great American history seen through the prism of men in Dancing with the wolvesreleased in 1990, which focused on the history of Native Americans.

This time, the American producer sign a true western with everything good about the flirting genre… and not so good. The pleasure of finding the great outdoors, the markers of Americana and the scope format is real, both for the spectators and for Costner who undeniably seems to enjoy filming the first steps of the United States, like a father watching his child. . But the other side of the coin is that the film suffers from (too much) great classicism both in substance and in form.

Carried by a 3 star casting – of sheriff – (Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson and Kevin Costner himself who did not take the leading role), the film follows the destiny of settlers (the ‘White Eyes of the Plain’) in the middle of the 19th century, convinced that the promised land was within reach, and Apaches whose fate we know in advance.

From the valley of San Pedro to the snow-capped mountains of Montanafrom the Indian reserves of Wyoming at the Santa Fe track in theWest Texasthe film maps the United States and the not-so-fantastic epic in this lawless country where massacres and violence, on one side or the other, are legion. With, as a key, damn entertaining shootout scenes. Of big show for the less young, experienced in the art of the western, but also for the more novices who will find, with delight, an atmosphere of the Red Dead Redemption.

The film succeeds in capturing the frenzy of this founding chapter in American history while questioning the values that have shaped the nation. But to show so many temporalities in parallel, Horizon (from the name of the land purchasable by the settlers in the Indian hunting reserve) also gets lost in conjectures, offering too many details.

Was there really a need for fresco so vast ? It remains to be seen whether the different stories come together in the following parts. The second, already shot and edited, is expected in theaters on September 11, 2024, another founding date of therecent American history.
