True to form, Russell Crowe criticized actors who were disappointed with their participation in superhero films, while sharing his own experience with DC and Marvel.

A job like any other

Particularly active in recent years, New Zealand actor Russell Crowe spoke in a long interview given to GQ. he discusses his new projects, but also looks back on several key moments in his career. Having worked with the Marvel and DC stables, the actor was invited to respond to a statement from actress Dakota Johnson who said after her participation in Madame Web that superhero films could be likened to ” ‘art made by committee’. The actor obviously responded with the frankness that we know him to have.

(…) You’re telling me that you signed for a Marvel film, and for a pu… universe of cartoon characters… and you didn’t feel enough emotion? (…) It’s a gigantic machine and they make imposing films. I was able to experience it on the DC side with Man of Steel and Zack Snyder, and I also experienced it on the Marvel side with Disney and Thor: Love and Thunder. I also experienced it with Marvel’s Dark Universe and the film Kraven the Hunter. These are jobs. This is your role, play your role. If you’re expecting this to be some sort of earth-shattering event, I believe you’re here for the wrong reasons.

Rub shoulders with geniuses

Far from being bitter, however, Russell Crowe does not consider these filmings to be bad experiences, quite the contrary. These films also allowed him, according to him, to rub shoulders with “geniuses” like directors Taika Waititi, JC Chandor and Zack Snyder.

It can be difficult, working in a world of blue screens where you have to convince yourself of more than just your character’s motivations. (…)But as far as it goes…and you can’t comment directly on her because I don’t know her and I don’t know what she went through, and the fact that you can have a crappy experience on film. Yes you can. But is this the Marvel process? I’m not sure you can say that. I didn’t have a bad experience. I mean (on Thor), OK, it’s a Marvel movie, but it’s Taika Waititi’s world, and it was a pleasure every day, being silly. (…) Working with JC (Chandor) was fun. You know, there are so many of these directors who have a certain level of skill – they’re real geniuses. (…)

Russell Crowe therefore does not necessarily share the opinion of actress Dakota Johnson and takes a lucid look at the manufacturing secrets of Marvel and DC films. The actor probably retains good memories and was able to easily distance himself from the scale of these projects, which, as we know, have already been criticized in the past for their more commercial than artistic scope.
