In 2013, Sublimes Créatures tried to ride on the success generated by Twilight for fantasy romances for teens, in vain.

The forgotten film

Few remember it, but in 2013 Sublime Creatures was released, a fantasy film for young adults starring Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert (two actors still virtually unknown to the general public), and Jeremy Irons. The story was set in a small town in the South, while Ethan, a teenager with a peaceful life, saw his daily life turned upside down by the arrival of Lena.. This mysterious new student hid a secret: she was in fact an enchantress. Their mutual attraction led them into a world of magic and danger, where Lena had to choose between light and darkness. In short, one more addition to the ocean of fantasy films and teen romances of the 2010s, the popularity of which is partly generated by the Twilight saga. Warner Bros. bet on this adaptation of a saga of four novels (The Saga of the Moons, by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl) by entrusting the project to director Richard LaGravenese (Write to exist, PS I Love You). Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson, Zoey Deutch and Rachel Brosnahan complete the cast.

A canceled saga

Unfortunately, even if the saga could already benefit from a nice fan base thanks to the books, the feature film was a commercial failure, grossing only $60 million, barely the amount of its budget. Several reasons would be at the origin of this fiasco; First, the changes made from the book, although minimal, outraged fans. And then, the choice of Warner Bros. to position the production as a direct competitor to Twilight certainly did not help its non-success. If sequels were planned, they will ultimately never take place. Mixed reviews and a disappointing box office brought a premature end to the cinematic adventure of this saga which could have been promising.

With a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, Sublimes Créatures was rather poorly received. Critics agree that “Romantic main characters and esteemed supporting cast aside, Beautiful Creatures is a plodding adaptation of a young adult novel that feels watered down for Twilight fans“. If you still want to see the film, you will have to go through the rental box, since it is not available on any streaming platform.
