Lhe liberal mayor of Wavre, Anne Masson, will no longer be. A liberal bastion since 1977, the MR mayorate was overthrown by a tripartite coalition made up of the Engagés, Ecolo and the PS.
The Engaged list, which reached an equal number of seats with the list of the mayor (MR) in Wavre at the end of Sunday’s vote, is preparing to relegate the liberals to the opposition this Tuesday. The general assemblies of the local sections of Engagés, PS and Ecolo approved a draft majority agreement on Monday evening. The final details were about to be settled in the morning, we learned from a good source.
The list of the outgoing mayor, Anne Masson, in clear decline, had collected on Sunday barely three votes more than that of the Engagés (12 seats each), but the latter preferred to form an alliance with the left.
Benoit Thoreau, having obtained the most votes on the list of Engagés, should become mayor, the party having come second in Wavre (31.2% of the vote), followed by the PS (14.6%) and Ecolo (14 .2%). The liberal LB list had obtained 31.3% of the votes, only 0.1% more than Les Engagés.
The Engagés thus realize, in the stronghold of the ex-president of the MR Charles Michel, the same scenario which pushed Nivelles Monday evening into their camp, again by constituting an “Olivier” coalition with the socialists and the ecologists.
The future majority would have 21 seats out of 33 on the municipal council.
