Renault 4 E-Tech Electric starts with R5 technology

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is followed by the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric. The new electric model will be presented at the Motor Show. Judging by its dimensions, it’s more of a subcompact SUV than a subcompact car. The car is also significantly larger than the R5.

Exterior and dimensions

The new electric R4 is 4.14 meters over 20 cm longer than its sister model R5the wheelbase is also eight centimeters longer. At 1.57 meters high, the car is actually no longer a small car, but must be classified as a small SUV. An Opel Mokka Electric, for example, which we classify as an SUV, is only 1.53 meters high. The ground clearance of 18.1 cm is also surprisingly high. And the trunk is also significantly larger than the R5 at 420 liters (the maximum value is not yet available).

Long Width Height wheelbase trunk
R4 Electric 4,14 m 1,80 m 1,57 m 2,62 m 420 Liter
R5 Electric 3,92 m 1,77 m 1,50 m 2,54 m 326-1.106 Liter

At the front there is a 1.45 meter wide grill with the illuminated Renault rhombus in the middle, which we know from the teaser images. The three-part taillights, which are arranged vertically like the historical model, are also already known. Another special feature is the large tailgate, which extends far down; so the loading sill is around 61 cm. There is also a roll-up roof and roof rails.

Drives and batteries

Like the electric R4, the electric R4 is based on the Plattform AmpR Smalland the drives are also largely adopted: front-wheel drives with 70, 90 and 110 kW have been announced for the R5, while the R4 only has the two more powerful ones. The batteries correspond to those from the R5. Renault has so far only announced a few details:

R4 Electric 90 kW R4 Electric 110 kW
drive FWD 90 kW, 225 Nm FWD 110 kW, 245 Nm
0-100 km/h / maximum speed k.A.
Akku netto/brutto 40/ca. 43 kWh 52/ca. 55 kWh
WLTP range ca. 300 km ca. 400 km
Max. DC-Ladeleistung 80 kW 100 kW
DC-Ladedauer (15-80%) 30 min 30 min
DC charging speed 0.9 min/km 1.1 kWh/min
Preis k.A. k.A.

In the case of the larger battery, the batteries consist of four modules; in the smaller one there are only three. The number of cells per module also differs: there are only 31 for the small battery, but 48 for the large one. This means that the small battery should have the configuration 93s1p, the large one 192s1p. The cells are prismatic, have an actually outdated NCM631 chemistry (i.e. only 60% nickel) and come from AESC Vision, as we know from the presentation of the R5.

It is charged with up to 100 kW direct current. Based on the charging times specified, charging speeds of 1.1 kWh or 0.9 kWh per minute are calculated – no claim to fame, but the car is simply not made for long distances. For comparison: The Mini Aceman Electric has 1.0 or 1.1 kWh/min, depending on the version. Like the R5, the R4 also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). It also receives a bidirectional 11 kW on-board charger. The R4 also supports Plug & Charge.

Interior and equipment

There are three equipment versions, which also differ inside. They have the same names as the R5: Evolution, Techno and Iconic. The basic version Evolution offers bright color combinations and small French flags. At the following one Technoversion exists Seats with denim-like covers and a dashboard covered with a quilted check fabric. The Top version Iconic finally has seat covers with a houndstooth pattern and yellow stitching.

The infotainment is based on Google Automotive; For longer routes, the navigation system automatically searches for suitable charging stations, says Renault. That mentioned Roll roof is for both the Techno and Iconic equipment available. It opens and closes at the touch of a button.

The base model has three recuperation modes, which can be changed using steering wheel paddles become. From the Techno version onwards, a one-pedal driving mode is added – for the first time on an electric car from Renault. In this mode, the car comes to a complete stop when the accelerator pedal is released; However, in reverse gear, the crawl gear remains activated in this mode.

Unlike the R5 has the Renault 4 also has an option Extended Grip System with the Snow and All-Terrain driving modes for light off-road use. These modes affect the braking system and the ESP system.

The Renault 4 will be built in the Maubiege plant from March 2025, the engine comes from nearby Cleon and the battery is made in . Prices are not yet known; However, the 110 kW version is likely to cost more than the 32,900 euros that are charged for the corresponding R5.

Bottom line

The Renault 5 is a typical small electric car; Now it gets a much larger sister model, which can be described as a small car SUV. The technical basis (AmpR Small) is the same, drives and batteries are also adopted, although the basic version with 70 kW is omitted. Otherwise, the roll-up roof is one of the highlights of the new model.
