In just one day, this science fiction film managed to top the Netflix list. Quite a revenge for this American production which was far from being unanimously acclaimed when it was released.

Available on Netflix since October 8, the film The Predator takes place after the events that occurred in the first two parts of the famous science fiction saga. The feature film, released in theaters in 2018, immerses us in the life of Quinn McKenna, an American army sniper, who witnesses the crash of a spaceship while he is on a hostage rescue mission in Mexico. After neutralizing the Predator, the hero has parts of his armor sent by mail to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. But his autistic son, Rory, becomes the target of these horrible creatures when he accidentally activates a beacon that allows other Predators to locate him.

The Predator : a science fiction film criticized from all sides

Barely arrived, The Predator has taken the top Netflix by storm by rising to first place for the most viewed films in dethroning in passing Platform 2. If he is today number 1 in the top, The Predator was, however, far from being unanimously acclaimed upon its release. The feature film received mostly negative reviews from audiences and critics. For the site Film Monthly, “the rapport between the characters seems insincere, the juvenile humor drowns out anything that might elicit ’80s chills, and all the actors are entirely at the mercy of their lines.” Le site Film Frenzy had not been too blunt to criticize this feature film which the storyline is perhaps the worst in the entire franchise.” A journalist from the site Spectrum Culture recommended to rent “rather the one with [Arnold] Schwarzenegger.”

The Predator : its failure at the box office destroyed all hopes of a sequel

Despite a convincing casting with Boyd Holbrook (Narcos), Olivia Munn (Iron Man 2), Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) et Keegan-Michael Key (Wonka), The Predator did not meet with the expected success. After eleven weeks of operation, Shane Black’s production has only collected 160 million dollars at the worldwide box office, including 51 million on American soil. A disappointing result which pushed the producers to cancel the two other planned sequels and to continue the saga with a prequel released in 2022 on Disney+.
