Deadpool & Wolverine brings back several iconic mutants from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

The latest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine is building anticipation for the upcoming film that will officially introduce mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The continuation of the saga Dead Pool reunites Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) as they embark on a journey across the multiverse.

In his upcoming film, Deadpool dives into the multiverse after being recruited by the Time Variance Authority to deal with the growing threat from Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). Wade realizes that this new threat could potentially cause him to lose everyone he loves, leading him to team up with his old pal Wolverine to defeat Nova and save the multiverse.

While it’s unclear exactly how Deadpool will factor into the MCU going forward, his character could play an instrumental role in the Multiverse saga, being one of the few main characters in it who is physically from a completely different universe.

We knew that a few characters from the past X-Men saga should make a return and the trailer (and set photos) confirmed a few of them:

– First of all, we most obviously have, Wolverine, which is part of the film’s title itself. Hugh Jackman takes his claws back and plays a new variant of Logan.

Colossus is a franchise staple Dead Pool from the beginning, guiding Wade on his journey from antihero to hero. The mutant member of the X-Men has an all-metal body, making him a powerful hero. At the end of Deadpool 2, Colossus was an official member of Wade’s found family. He was previously played by Donald Mackinnon (X-Men), Daniel Cudmore (X-Men 2, X-Men: The Final Doom, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and now by Stefan Kapičić since Deadpool 1 and 2.

John Allerdyce, aka Pyrofirst appeared in X-Men 2. A turbulent and impetuous young mutant, Pyro finds himself increasingly at odds with the pacifist ways of the X-Men. Eventually, he was drawn to Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants, fighting against his former allies during the events of X-Men: The Last Standwhere he was defeated by his former friend Iceman.

Sabretooth is a sporadic but important character in the franchise X-Men from the very beginning. Tyler Mane first played the character in the original 2000 film, where he was portrayed as one of Magneto’s lackeys. He is later revealed to be an old friend and war buddy of Wolverine in X-Men Origins.

Toad is one of the first mutants introduced in Marvel Comics, usually fighting alongside Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. So far, he’s only made a handful of appearances in the franchise X-Men, serving as Magneto’s little-known henchman until his infamous death at the hands of Storm. Set photos have revealed that Toad will return in a battle sequence during the events of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Kelly Hu first appeared in X-Men 2 in the role of Lady Deathstrike, brainwashed by General William Stryker, who sought to exterminate mutants. Wielding long claws similar to Wolverine’s, she acted as Stryker’s enforcer throughout the film. She is ultimately killed after a fight with Wolverine when he injects Adamantium directly into her body.

– The teleporting mutant Azazel was a member of the Hellfire Club first seen in X-Men: The Beginning. Working alongside Sebastian Shaw, Azazel fought the first iteration of the X-Men in the 1960s. However, he was killed off-screen before the events of Days of Future Past, leaving much about his character unexplored.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine comes out July 24.
