Clouds of dust from North Africa blanketed much of Greece on Tuesday, creating a suffocating, otherworldly atmosphere.
The dust cloud turned the sky over Athens and other areas orange and significantly reduced visibility.
The sky is expected to clear on Wednesday, with west-northwest winds gradually carrying dust towards the Aegean Sea.
High concentrations of dust are expected on Thursday on the Dodecanese islands.
Improvement underway this Wednesday
The cloud of Saharan dust that engulfed the Greek capital began to fade on Wednesday after a change in wind gradually carried the orange and brown dust away from Athens.
Skies were noticeably clearer Wednesday, but a little accumulation of dust was seen on parked cars and a few residents walked around with masks covering their noses and mouths.
The Acropolis and other monuments took on Martian hues Tuesday after strong winds carried dust from the Sahara across much of southern and central Greece, giving the Greek capital’s atmosphere a filter Martian.
