New match, new power play goal for Patrik Laine. The Finn scored the winning goal in the third period to allow the Montreal Canadiens to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Friday night at Little Caesars Arena.

Special teams played an important role in this meeting, the first of two in 24 hours between the two Atlantic Division rivals. And lately, power play rhymes with Laine.

The sniper's one-timer was so powerful that it went behind goaltender Cam Talbot after smashing defenseman Moritz Seider's stick. Laine has now shaken the strings seven times in eight games.

On the defensive side, the Canadian frustrated the Wings during their four power play situations, largely thanks to the work of newcomer Alexandre Carrier. The Quebecer's every move was certainly scrutinized by fans. He made a very good impression in his first duel since being acquired from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Justin Barron.

Carrier was threatening with several shots that hit the target. He also spent 18:58 on the ice and finished with a +1 rating.

Jake Evans does it all

Another big contributor on special teams, Jake Evans did things in a big way for his 300th game in the National Hockey League. His active stick in defensive territory complicated things for the Red Wings and he added his two cents to the offense.

In the first period, the 28-year-old center player first set the table for Emil Heineman's seventh goal, then he himself scored at the end of the period. Evans stole the puck from Lucas Raymond at the Detroit blue line before patiently letting Talbot compromise to thwart him.

The Ontarian has 18 points to his record in 32 games. Whoever becomes a free agent next summer continues to increase his value, whether for a transaction or a contract extension.

Arber Xhekaj, thanks to his first of the season, was the Canadian's other scorer. With 33 shots in total, this is the first time that the Habs have exceeded the bar of 30 shots in a match in 2024-2025.

The two teams will quickly head to Montreal as they will face each other at the Bell Center on Saturday evening.
