The legendary Phil Collins gives his news in a new documentary dedicated to him: “Phil Collins: Drummer First”. The singer and drummer of Genesis – retired for two years – talks about his health problems.
“The battery took a toll on my hands and legs,” explains the star, who suffered from serious back problems.
His son, Nic Collins, recounts in this documentary how his father was handicapped by his health problems: “Drums actually caused him major back problems, due to the posture he adopted while playing. He even had to have neck surgery. The consequence is that he now suffers from “drop foot”.”
“Drop foot” syndrome causes an inability to lift the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the muscles that lift the foot. Phil Collins therefore moves with difficulty. And with the help of a cane.
“I'm 71 years old, I've spent my whole life playing drums and suddenly not being able to do it anymore is a shock,” admits Phil Collins. But if I wake up one day with a pair of chopsticks in my hands, I’ll give it a shot.”
