Many French people have done research on the Internet this year 2024, and many have sought to know the definition of words that they have heard in the media but whose meaning they were not necessarily able to grasp. The online dictionary unveiled this Tuesday, December 17, its ranking of the most searched words this year on its site. At the top of the list, we find “wokism” which was already the word most searched for by the French in 2023.

“A real catalyst for today’s divisions, this word remains omnipresent in the media, and continues to raise many questions, as the reality it designates can seem vague depending on the discourse,” explains Le Robert. “Denoting a current of thought of American origin which denounces injustices and discrimination, wokism is generally used in a pejorative manner by detractors of the movement to denounce methods considered excessive,” we continue.

The year 2024 was not short of events or incidents that the slayers of “wokism” were able to establish as a cause in their own right. The ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games, deemed “woke” by a certain section of the population, in particular sympathizers of the political extreme right, is the perfect illustration of this.
