In December 2023, as part of a check on tuberculosis in its dairy herd, 300 animals were tested. Seven cows considered “questionable” are slaughtered. On January 7, 2024, the results were confirmed: one of the cattle was indeed positive. At least that’s what the departmental laboratory responsible for the tests says. Except that he was wrong because of an unfortunate error in identifying the samples.
The Gaec Maris company, known for the quality of its cheeses sold in the department's markets, ceased its activities for a month, threw away 120,000 liters of milk and urgently invested 40,000 euros to acquire equipment, including a pasteurizer. Tools that will never be used…
-Because on January 17, 2024, François Pesneau, the prefect of Haute-Vienne, informed the breeder that there was no tuberculosis in his breeding. “The day before, the veterinary services had told me that the 300 animals had to be slaughtered. We were ready to do it! » laments the person concerned, more upset than ever.
“The prefect, who had spoken to us about amicable compensation, has just told us that there would be none,” laments the breeder. The latter, in a period of reserve due to elections to the Chamber of Agriculture, was unable to respond to our requests. For the financial, moral and image damage, Pascal Maris intends to claim 230,000 euros from the State by now going before the administrative jurisdiction.
