The rumors have faded somewhat in recent weeks, due to the start of the campaign for the cantonal elections. But they have not completely disappeared. Candidates for the Valais Council of State, the outgoing Franz Ruppen (UDC) and Christophe Darbellay (Center) would have in the back of their minds the desire to present themselves to the Council of States in the fall of 2027, to run for one of the senatorial seats Valais. So, even before electing their executive next March, should Valais residents prepare to return to the polls a few months later for a complementary election to the cantonal government?

If the question arises, it is because the shooting window exists. The 2027 election to the Council of States will be a special moment. Unprecedented, even. Beat Rieder, in office since 2015, and Marianne Maret elected under the Dome in 2019 will both leave their seats in the Upper House. Two seats for as many places to take, therefore. After having defended, sometimes with difficulty, its citadel during the last three elections, The Center (ex-PDC) could see one of the two seats it has held since 1857 escape it. Enough to develop many desires, including among Valais ministers who are running for their own succession.
