SENEGAL-INONDATIONS-SANTE / Floods in Bakel: fears of proliferation of epidemic pathologies ruled out (doctor) – Senegalese press agency

Bakel, Jan 7 (APS) – Fears linked to the proliferation of diseases with epidemic potential following the floods that occurred between September and October have been dispelled, said the chief doctor of the health district of Bakel (east), Goumba Lo, welcoming the effectiveness of the health response plan put in place in the flooded areas from the start.

“We know that if there are floods, we really expect to have cases of skin diseases, diarrhea and especially urgently cases of malaria. But what we feared did not happen,” rejoiced Mr. Lo, in an interview with the APS.

According to him, these pathologies could not emerge thanks to the health response plan put in place from the very beginning to prevent, raise awareness and prepare the response in flooded areas.

“The few cases of malaria and dermatosis recorded were resolved thanks to the early implementation of medication and impregnated mosquito nets (…). Our health response plan allowed us to undertake some actions, especially in relation to prevention and preparation for the response,” declared Goumba Lo.

In the health posts of Golmy, Yaféra, Aroundou, Koughany, Ballou, localities affected by the floods, “interventions were put in place from the first hours in concert with the authorities to watch over the populations,” he said. he lets it be known.

“We carried out field raids and mass communications. In the configuration of the health district, there are what we call alert and monitoring and community alert committees which are at the village level,” he emphasized.

In the event of unusual events, these committees will pass the information to community relays, then to the head nurses before arriving at the district where, after analysis, appropriate measures will be taken, explained the doctor.

It also magnified the contribution of other sectors such as the hygiene service, the firefighters and the defense and security forces (FDS) which made it possible to relieve the populations.

“The response continues. There are monitoring and evaluations so far. We had set up daily monitoring sheets and left some medications. Every day, the providers, depending on the patients they receive at the health posts, tell us the situation and we do the mapping to see the origins,” explained Goumba Lo.

Mr. Lo also indicated that proposals were made to the authority for the rehabilitation and repair of impacted health posts.
