Until now, players banned from casinos in Switzerland could travel to Liechtenstein to try their luck. But this is no longer possible. An agreement between the two territories came into force on Tuesday, aiming to improve protection against gambling addiction and excessive gambling. Thus, gambling bans decreed in Switzerland now also apply on the other side of the border, and vice versa. This applies to all establishments and online casinos.
The latter must require pay slips and bank documents from people who play often or with high stakes. If these indicate an insufficient financial situation, the customer is not authorized to play. Casinos must in fact exclude participants who bet beyond their means, such as those who are addicted. People can also be excluded on the basis of information provided by relatives.
For its part, the Swiss Casino Federation is calling for the remaining gaps in player protection to be filled. She believes that legal bases should be created so that exclusions from Swiss games are also valid in other neighboring countries. Currently, illegal foreign online casinos hold a market share of around 40% in Switzerland. They circumvent the rules since excluded people can continue to play freely, without paying taxes or AVS charges in our country.
