This Saturday, January 11, at 2 p.m. the village of Rennes-le-Château will open its doors for an immersive treasure hunt. A game orchestrated by local guide Stéphanie Buttegeg who is inspired by the discoveries of Abbé Saunière. An event that will immerse young and old in the secrets of the crypt.
A leap into the past to rediscover local history
The small town of Rennes-le-Château will be the scene of a fascinating enigma. Indeed, for more than a century researchers have been flocking to this village to discover a legendary treasure. A mystery that Abbé Saunière would have discovered.
Stéphanie Buttegeg, a guide passionate about the history of this village, therefore decided to create a treasure hunt there. “I base this on the entire reconstruction of the village that the priest did. I rely on the codings and puzzles he left behind. My goal is for people to discover history while having fun,” she explains. At each stage, participants will have to solve puzzles inspired by the codes left by Abbot Saunière, with one goal: to uncover the secrets of the village and advance in their quest to discover the secrets of the crypt.
An escape game inspired by the character of Arsène Lupin
When Father Saunière arrived in this village in 1885, he made several discoveries under the church. There he finds mysterious coded scrolls. These documents, once deciphered, would have revealed to him the existence of a treasure buried beneath the soil of the village. He then discovers a pot of gold coins and a strange crypt under the church. The treasure hunt proposed by Stéphanie Buttegeg is not the only immersive activity organized in Rennes-le-Château. To enhance the experience, the guide also offers an escape game. It is inspired by the character of Arsène Lupin. “In Maurice Leblanc's novel, the author talks about the lords of the castle of our city. So I decided to make a game based on his work which takes place throughout the castle,” describes the guide. The initiative also allows “to promote local heritage”. “It highlights the mysteries surrounding Abbé Saunière and arouses interest in the history of this small commune in Aude.” An experience that will undoubtedly immerse visitors in the old times.
