The 2024 edition of the Champions Trophy, won by Paris Saint-Germain, could be the last of its kind. The birth of a new format, under the leadership of Vincent Labrune, is under consideration.
During the weekend, in parallel with the sixteenth day of Ligue 1 McDonald's, Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco, the Ligue 1 Champion and winner of the Coupe de France against its runner-up, fought hard on the side of Doha as part of the 2024 edition of the Champions Trophy. The latter, won by the capital club in added time (1-0), could be the last of its kind while a new form is, according to information published by The Teamcurrently under study.
Under the leadership of Vincent Labrune, president of the Professional Football League (LFP), four teams could compete, like what is currently happening in Spain or Italy, in a Final Four. The Champions Trophy would be contested in winter and no longer in summer, as is initially the case, and would bring together the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Ligue 1, in addition to the winner of the Coupe de France. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Ivory Coast have already expressed their interest in organizing its first edition.
“This reform aims to ensure the presence of the best teams in the Championship in order to optimize the promotion of L1 abroad”specifies the French sports daily in its columns. However, to date, nothing has yet been acted upon.
