His black eyes follow the comings and goings of visitors. The little brown-haired dog is lying on a mattress blackened with soot, in a caravan that no longer has windows, in the middle of a camp emptied of its occupants. Only the various waste, cables, clothes, tools, furniture, suggest that several dozen people lived there.
The shantytown under the Béguey-Podensac bridge, near Cadillac, was evacuated in mid-December. Roma families, subject to rental eviction proceedings, are said to have abandoned several dogs there.
“The police alerted us. We called on Sacpa, an animal pound in Floirac,” explains Bernard Mateille, mayor of Podensac. The company confirms having collected ten dogs on December 19, which were to be taken care of by the Bordeaux and South-West SPA in Mérignac. “We only received four, six had to die in the emergency clinic,” said the shelter management. The causes of death have not been communicated.
Emotion on social networks
Several dogs are said to still live on the land. “I installed a camera,” confides Christine, a Cadillac resident committed to the animal cause. “There are two big ones, very shy, who hide when there are people around. There is also the little brown one in the caravan. » The septuagenarian raised the alarm on social networks by publishing photos and videos. She claims to have seen dead bodies of dogs and cats.
Several Internet users reacted by questioning the Podensac town hall. “We received a lot of calls,” confirms the mayor. We have called the pound twice and, since then, our services have regularly checked to see if there are other dogs. These interventions will cost several thousand euros to the municipality and the community of municipalities, owner of the land. »
Regarding the rumors of mistreatment targeting Roma populations, the SPA responds: “The four puppies that we recovered are in good health. They are not microchipped, but they have no wounds that suggest their chip was removed. » Once their vaccinations are updated, they should be offered for adoption within three weeks.
