In the Hautes-Alpesthe population stagnates. The department gained only 560 inhabitants between 2016 and 2022. According to INSEE figures, which were revealed on December 19, the department of Hautes-Alpes had only 141,677 inhabitants in 2022, or 3% of the population of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
141,677 inhabitants for Hautes-Alpes in 2022
In its study, INSEE notes that “ population almost stagnates » with a very tiny increase of 0.1% per year, “ consequence of a natural deficit which is increasing and a stable migratory surplus “. This stability of the population is confirmed if we look at the population figures in the most important municipalities of Hautes-Alpes:
- Gap : With 40,656 inhabitants, the town of Gap lost 0.1% of inhabitants and recorded zero natural and migratory balances.
- Briançon: With 10,748 inhabitants, the town of Briançon lost 1.8% of inhabitants. The natural balance is less than 0.1% and the migratory balance falls by 1.7%.
- Embrun: With 6,387 inhabitants, Embrun displays an interesting dynamic. The town on the banks of the Serre-Ponçon lake gains 0.6% of inhabitants. This increase is driven by net migration of 1.4%.
The south of the Hautes-Alpes more attractive?
It should be noted that the municipalities of Veynes and Laragne-Monteglin attract residents with a net migration of +1.3% and +1.7%. Those of Saint-Chaffrey (0.35%) or Villar-Saint-Pancrace (0.35%) are losing some. These figures illustrate a more dynamic south of the Hautes-Alpes and a north, living mainly from tourism, less attractive, perhaps also more isolated and more expensive from a housing point of view.
Note that at 1is January 2022, 5,170,312 inhabitants lived in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
