The case was back before Superior Court Judge Claude Villeneuve on Monday morning. Corriveau, 45, faces 114 counts of assault with a weapon and mischief. Around sixty witnesses could be called to the stand by the Crown during the six weeks of the trial.
A similar fact motion will be argued before trial. This tool could allow the Crown to prove a modus operandi. “We are asking the judge to provide proof of everything that happened before, since the facts are so similar to the offense that we think they are relevant elements to allow us to prove the identity [de l’accusé] and the offense charged,” explains the prosecutor for criminal and penal prosecutions in the case, Me Frédérique Malouin.
Usually, the prosecution cannot use evidence of other offenses to prove a crime.
A publication ban prevents the media from broadcasting evidence in the case, in order not to contaminate future jurors.
The accused, who is represented by Me Jean-Christophe Côté, is detained during the proceedings.
