Created by the law of January 4, 2006, the CNRA is an independent authority responsible for “regulating the audiovisual media space”. Before its current form, this institution had undergone two developments: the High Council of Radio and Television, then the High Council of Audiovisual, established by law 98-09 of February 11, 1998.

The CNRA plays an essential role in promoting media diversity, improving the quality of content and protecting freedoms. Its members, appointed for a non-revocable six-year term, work to guarantee a balanced audiovisual landscape that complies with democratic standards.

Since its creation, the CNRA has been led by four presidents. Magistrate Ndiaye Ngom was the first to occupy this position, from 2006 to 2012. She was followed by three emblematic media figures: Babacar Touré, who chaired the institution from 2012 to 2018, Babacar Diagne, in the position of 2018 to 2024, and Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye, often referred to by his initials MON, who has held the presidency since December 2024.
