Next March, the choice of national selection of Konstantinos Karetsas could well be made. In any case, this is what the KRC Genk prodigy implies.
When were there such heated debates regarding the selection choice of a potential Red Devil? Probably to Adnan Januzaj, who could opt for Albania and was finally called up by Marc Wilmots in 2014. Or even to Mehdi Carcela, finally becoming a Moroccan international after wearing the Belgian jersey in a friendly.
But we even wonder if the file Konstantinos Karetsasat a time when Belgian football is suffering setback after setback, is not even hotter. At only 17 years old, the little genius of KRC Genk has all eyes on him: will he choose Greece, which is pushing hard, or Belgium, whose new CEO Vincent Mannaert has made him a priority?
Greece or Belgium: the choice in March for Karetsas?
Interviewed by DAZN during this truce, “Kos” Karetsas was of course questioned on the subject. And if he still seems hesitant, he still gives a good clue. “I think we’ll see in March, I’ll see who calls me. I have two or three months to show myself at the club and prove that I’m ready for the selection,” he smiles.
“I believe that I will only make a decision when I am forced to decide, when a decision has to be made. It will be a difficult decision, it is two parts of me and one of the two parts will be angry with me (laughs) But I will follow my heart and I will choose the country where I can give the best of myself,” concludes Konstantinos Karetsas.
In other words: in March, if one of the two national teams calls him, it will be one step ahead of the other, and a good one. Domenico Tedesco – or his successor – will have to prepare for a crucial double duel with Ukraine; can he afford to call up a very young player like Karetsas in these circumstances? Otherwise, Greece could go all out… and win the bet.
