The year 2025 marks a turning point for the DGMwhich announces the adoption of satellite data of Meteosat Third Generation (MTG). This system, replacing the old Second Generation Meteosat (MSG), opens a new era in monitoring and analysis of weather conditions.

Since December 4, 2024, MTG data are accessible via the service Eumetcast Europe (Ku-Band)as officially announced EUMETSATthe European organization dedicated to satellite meteorology.

MTG: a technological advance for more precise forecasts

Contacted by Le Matin, Houcine Youabedresponsible for Communication at the DGM, clarified that this technological advancement allows a observation continue and high resolution atmospheric phenomenathus revolutionizing the weather forecast and the climate risk management.

The MTG system brings major innovations compared to its predecessors:

Continuous observation and improved resolution : THE satellites provide images every 10 minutes at a resolution of 1 km, compared to 15 minutes and 3 km for MSG.

Expanded spectral range : 16 observation channels instead of 12 previously, offering a more detailed analysis of atmospheric phenomena.

Near real-time tracking lightning : An exceptional novelty that makes it possible to detect and track lightning, contributing to better prevention of severe thunderstorms.

Rapid detection for better management of climate risks

According to the data provided by Mr. Youabed, the new MTG offers continuous, high-resolution observation of atmospheric phenomena, with the ability to capture images in a wavelength range plus large.

And to add that “the satellite data of MTG allow better detection of short-term climatic eventslike the severe thunderstorms, heat waves et ocean temperature variations. This data enhances the accuracy of short-term forecasts and optimizes the risk management linked to extreme weather events“.

On a national and international scale, this technological evolution allows you to anticipate the weather risks and to better meet the needs of users, whether it is security of the population or economic well-being.

With the MTG system, the DGM confirms its commitment to putting technologies the most advanced in the service of forecasting and climate security.
