The traditional truffle market on December 31 organized in Gramat did not attract the crowd or the producers this time. No doubt due to a very cold morning and competition from the Lalbenque market on Tuesday.
Organized by the Lotoise Association of Causses and Dordogne Valley truffle growers with the support of Cauvaldor and the Gramat town hall, the market was chaired by Éric Villard, president of the black diamond brotherhood.
It was the mayor of Gramat Michel Sylvestre who rang the bell announcing the opening of the market. The five producers present had brought some 3 kg of truffles. After checking the products, 2,250 kg of tuber melanosporum and 600 grams of brumale were retained; 170 grams were rejected. Alain Desplats and Nicolas Gardère carried out the checks.
€1,000 to €1,300 per kilo
Even though the number of customers was low, the baskets were emptied quickly with prices varying from 1,000 euros to 1,300 euros per kilo.
It must be said, as the producers present pointed out, that the year presents itself under very varied auspices with products of very varied qualities while we were expecting a very good year.
“This of course depends on the rainfall which was very variable depending on the municipalities and the orientation of the truffle fields” we heard. This shows that truffle farming is far from being an exact science!
