Nestled between Margeride, Aubrac, Causses and Cévennes, Mende is a destination that appeals to history and nature lovers alike. Capital of Gévaudan, it is the ideal starting point for discovering the territory classified as a UNESCO world heritage site: the Causses and the Cévennes.

Mende, the capital of Gévaudan

Not to be missed: Saint-Privat Cathedral. Founded by Urban V, pope from the region, this majestic building offers a breathtaking view from its 70-meter bell tower, accessible with a guide from the Tourist Office. In the heart of the old town, let yourself be charmed by its medieval streets, its picturesque squares, and its mansions with ornate doors.

Then take a gourmet break to taste the famous crunchy almond shortbread cookies. A local specialty that you can taste along the banks of the Lot, while admiring the Notre-Dame bridge which spans the river since the Middle Ages.

The wild landscapes of Lozère

Mende is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, so don't miss a beat. For example, head towards Margeride and visit Charpal Lake, a popular site for fishermen and hikers. The nine-kilometre trail that borders its crystal clear waters is a true moment of serenity surrounded by nature. For adventure lovers, the Grands Causses and the Cévennes offer you spectacular panoramas of the Gorges du Tarn and de la Jonte.

Don’t miss the Parc des Loups du Gévaudan. Just 40 minutes from Mende, this animal park allows you to observe wolves in complete safety. For an even more unusual experience, combine this visit with an excursion to the European Bison Reserve, where you can discover these majestic giants by horse-drawn carriage in summer or by sleigh in winter.
