” Your pain rassis can be transformed into energy. The message, written on boxes, calls out. In (Hauts-de-Seine), an experiment, designed in consultation with residents of the town, aims to transform biogas or in fertilizer all your old croutons. Explanations.

A wasted commodity

If it is the pride of the French and even has its emblem, the baguette, classified as intangible heritage by UNESCO, bread is also widely wasted. “The French throw away on average 4.5 kg of bread per year,” explains the municipality. Starting from this observation, and facing the wild dumps promoting the proliferation of pests observed in the town, the municipality, accompanied by citizen groups, has imagined a virtuous recycling solution.

Residents can place their bread in collectors provided for this purpose. The instructions are simple: place your bread there, without packaging and without other foods. It must be dry, not soiled or moldy, so as not to risk rotting the collector.

Biogas and fertilizer

The bread is then collected once or twice a week by a service provider, with trucks powered by biogas. Stale bread is mixed with other food waste. It is thus transformed into biogas or compost which will serve as fertilizer for local farmers.

Six bread boxes were installed in different parts of the city. You will find them at the entrance to the Grésillon cultural and social space, inside the market as well as in the Agrocité garden. In November 2024, three new collectors were added to the Saâd-Abssi space, the Nelson-Mandela space and the Aimé-Césaire space.
