The Rouveroy wind turbines are always controversial: “You don’t know where to look elsewhere? There’s not only Estinnes in Belgium…”

These wind turbines will have a total power of 37.2 MW and will produce enough electricity to supply some 26,900 households annually.“, communicated the Storm company which already has 55 wind turbines in Belgium to its credit. “The environmental impact study (EIA) was carried out by an approved design office between June 2024 and today which analyzed the different aspects of the project with regard to its environment. This study accompanies the permit request which was submitted on December 12, 2024 and for which a public inquiry will soon be organized..”

An informative workshop

To explain his project to Estinnois, the developer is organizing a workshop this Thursday between 4 and 8 p.m. at the municipal fair. “During this workshop you will have the opportunity to learn about the characteristics of the project; consult the project maps, the results of the EIA and the visual simulations but also ask your questions to representatives of Storm and the design office.”

On social networks, Estinnois have expressed their dissatisfaction with this project. “You don’t know how to look elsewhere? It’s not just Estinnes in Belgium! Especially since it doesn’t bring us anything“, comments a citizen.

For another, it is also the destination of the electricity that poses a problem. “The promoter speaks of 26,900 households but where? Abroad ! Like the electricity from the 11 Estinnes wind turbines… All to better extract agricultural land.”

Other citizens are more pragmatic. “Studies show that the wind potential is strong in our area… They are therefore not going to place wind turbines where there is no wind. It is therefore logical to have so much demand for our municipality. It’s a bit the same principle of the coal mines before. They were found in some places not in others.”

On the municipality’s side, the policy is to systematically refuse any new project. But how long will it last?
