Pietro Vidi rehearses ‘Tribe’, the traditional masterpiece by Jacopo Larcher in Cadarese

In Cadarese, Italy, Pietro Vidi repeated “Tribe,” one of the world’s most difficult traditional climbs, completed in 2019 by Jacopo Larcher.

On November 28, 2024, Italian mountaineer Pietro Vidi repeated Tribethe superb traditional climb of Cadarese in Val d’Ossola, Italy, first climbed in 2019 by Jacopo Larcher and repeated in 2020 by another traditional master, James Pearson.

The 22-year-old’s repetition of Madonna di Campiglio might come as a surprise, but on closer inspection it shouldn’t be. Vidi climbed to 8C+ (Fuck the system in Fionnay in Switzerland) and sent 9a to the rock (Last night in Siurana) – and in recent months he has started to focus his efforts on hard trading, with excellent results. Climbs such as Young and stupid (8b R/X) et Glittery toes stand out, two routes in Cadda where protection is marginal and falling is not an option. At the end of November, while putting all her equipment in the lead, Vidi took on the third ascent of the Tribe.

Larcher chose to leave the climb unranked, aiming to once again focus on the beauty of the climb rather than the simple difficulty. Larcher defined it as “ the hardest thing I have ever climbed » while Pearson, confirming the 5 star character, added that the itinerary contains “the most difficult series of movements I have ever done on a traditional route. » Even Vidi, who like the others first worked on the sequences on the prope before trying them from below, did not commit. Here’s what he told Planetmountain:

“I tried the route for the first time in the spring, out of simple curiosity, after getting into trad climbing last season. I was immediately struck by the beauty of the terrain and as soon as conditions improved in autumn I immediately returned to Cadda.

The first few attempts went very well and I thought it would only be a matter of days, but only later did I realize how technical and condition-dependent the second rock was, which , with rain and snow, made the process much longer than expected.

As for the grade, I respect Jacopo’s decision not to give one, although it is certainly the hardest route I have ever climbed and in general one of the projects that took the longest time! »
