If you looked up at the sky this 1is January 2025 shortly before 7 p.m., you may have seen the Northern Lights above your home. An unusual phenomenon as Florentin Cayrouse of the Météo Centre-Val de association explains. “It’s quite rare to see the Northern Lights at our latitudes. When we see them with the naked eye, there was a strong geomagnetic storm. Currently we are at the peak of solar activity, the cycles last eleven years. »

Glows, distinct to the naked eye, which allowed this magnificent spectacle for five to ten minutes depending on the location. “At our latitudes, it is often pink colors. When geomagnetic storms are really very strong, like what we had last May and October, they can produce green colors with shades of purple and blue. »

Strong solar activity

Thanks to a peak in solar activity in 2025, the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights in the coming months also increases. “We risk having other northern lights during the year depending on the solar wind particles. When they arrive on earth, they form the northern lights when they encounter the magnetic field. » Grab your cameras!
